The Small Business Saturday idea arose as a way to remind people to spend some of their holiday dollars at local businesses, rather than at some remote mall. Small Business Saturday takes place on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, following close on the heels of what is called Black Friday.

This will be the second year the Chamber has partnered with the United Way of Northern New Mexico to run this promotion. Local businesses can sign up to promise a portion of their receipts on that day to the United Way, and in return, the United Way will help to publicize their participation throughout the region and within Los Alamos National Laboratory through the Lab’s employee giving campaign.

Several local businesses joined up last year, and were extremely pleased with the results. Dave Fox reported to us that CB Fox had experienced their single biggest day of sales on that day in 2012. He said that some people who needed furniture or mattresses put off those major purchases until that day, knowing that a portion of their purchase would go to support the United Way. More than $8,000 was raised on that day in 2012- let’s try to top that in 2013!

You can sign up to be one of the participating businesses by calling Katy Korkos at 661-4816 or by using the link below the events calendar on fyiLA.com.
